My Top 10 Episodes of K-On

K-On is one of the least exciting television shows I've ever watched. I felt nearly no impulse to hurry up and watch the next episode whenever I'd finish one. Honestly, that's not a bad thing! The slow pace makes for relaxing entertainment. The show is cute--centering around a girls' high school Light Music Club. There is little to no drama, no romance, no stakes. But it's still sweet and enjoyable to watch, most of the time. Some of the episodes are a little boring, but the rest are either heartwarming, funny, or otherwise adorable. Here are my top 10:

10. Season 1 Episode 10: Another Training Camp!

The training camp episodes of K-On are always fun, since they feature a change of scenery~

In this training camp, they bring along their new underclassman Azusa and she ends up indulging in their shenanigans. I like this episode because she has a bonding moment with Yui and she ends up with a really cute tan!

9. Season 1 Episode 8: Freshman Reception

This is a pretty classic K-On episode. The theme is new member recruitment and the girls try many different tactics to get underclassmen interested in joining the Light Music Club. The episode concludes with a performance by the Light Music Club, which goes somewhat poorly. The energy of the show is good, though, which inspires Azusa to join. This episode features a performance and introduces a new main character!

8. Season 1 Episode 1: Disband the Club!

This is the first episode of K-On and it did a good job of introducing some of the main characters and the vibe of the show. It interested me enough to keep me coming back for another episode, which many shows cannot do. For this reason, it makes the top ten!

7 and 6. Season 2 Episodes 18 and 19: Leading Role! and Romeo and Juliet!

I'm rolling these two episodes together. They aren't exactly a two-parter, but the events of Leading Role! that make me love the episode so much aren't really brought to fruition until the next episode, Romeo and Juliet!

Leading Roles! sees Ritsu and Mio get nominated to play Juliet and Romeo respectively in the school festival play. They're so reluctant, but it's cute to see them come to terms with the casting decision! They also participate in a maid cafe, which is just classic anime materia.

Romeo and Juliet! contains the actual play and the "drama" of the school festival day. In addition, the Light Music Club is supposed to perform the next day, so they stay up all night together at school practicing. It's a very cute moment shared by all five club members.

5. Season 2 Episode 20: Yet Another School Festival!

This follows the events of the previous two episodes on the list. This is HTT's (After School Tea Time, aka the Light Music Club) final school festival with the four original members. Their faculty advisor has special T-shirts made and honestly, this is one of the most heartwarming episodes and it kind of choked me up.

4. Season 2 Episode 7: Tea Party!

This episode starts off kind of sketchy, with Mio feeling like she has a stalker. The Light Music Club discovers that Mio has a fully fledged fan club and they decide to put on a show for them. It's really cute and I love episodes that have performances in them.

3. Season 1 Episode 6: School Festival!

This is the first official performance of the Light Music Club. This is the origin story for Mio's fanclub as well. Their performance outfits are also really cute, probably the best in the entire show.

2. Season 2 Episode 24: Graduation Ceremony

This is the final "official" episode of the anime, though there are special bonus episodes released afterward. The episode is about the four upperclassmen graduating, and Azusa's feelings about this change. There's some goofiness, and Yui being her typical, unprepared self. But the end of the episode is super touching and sad, as the older girls sing a song that they wrote just for Azusa. I admit, I cried.

  1. Season 2 Episode 12: Summer Festival

This episode features a change of scenery, which is an exciting change of pace. The girls go to a music festival in the mountains. I love the atmosphere of the episode. The girls lay on the hillside together at the end and talk about how they want to keep playing music together forever. I just felt the episode was incredibly special while I was watching it. It also features a sun-tanned Azusa, which is always a treat.
